Te Ara - The Encyclopedia of New Zealand

Online encyclopedia of New Zealand geography, history, & culture

Te Ara is still to-date, the largest CSS design project I have ever carried out, and it was a special privilege to be involved from the inception of a project to build a world-leading public online encyclopedia. I worked with Brian Smith, Creative Director at Shift, to design a system of templates capable of handling the huge variety of content requirements, while conveying consistent relationships across the different page types. We created a unique CSS swatch system providing editors with the ability to flip between different colour styles for each layout, while maintaining the aesthetic integrity of the site. In addition to the main encyclopedia itself, an additional sub-site was required for the newly digitized 1966 Encyclopedia.
